Namibia hosts first African nuclear test verification exercise
Namibia is hosting the first Integrated Field Exercise in Africa, a major international peace and security drill led by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). Running from October 10 to November 20 in the Erongo Region, the exercise involves approximately 250 international experts, including national technical experts, CTBTO staff, and surrogate inspectors nominated by signatory states.
The exercise is designed to test and refine the operational readiness required to conduct on-site inspections under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). These inspections serve as a verification measure to clarify whether a nuclear test explosion has occurred when diplomatic or technical means fail to resolve compliance questions. To support the scale of the operation, approximately 150 tonnes of technical and support equipment have been transported to Namibia via the Port of Walvis Bay and Walvis Bay International Airport.
Namibian officials stated that hosting the event demonstrates the nation’s commitment to nuclear disarmament and international security. The Erongo Region was selected for its strategic aviation, maritime, and road infrastructure, as well as its proximity to medical facilities. This event follows similar large-scale exercises previously held in Kazakhstan and Jordan.
