Namibia implements new framework for uranium mining

The Namibian Cabinet is working to establish a clearer and more conducive framework for mining operations, including in previously restricted or ecologically sensitive areas. This policy shift aims to provide regulatory certainty to attract investment and support the global energy transition by expanding Namibia’s role as a supplier of heavyweight minerals like uranium.

Proponents of the move emphasize that resource extraction can coexist with environmental protection through rigorous oversight. Existing uranium operations in the Erongo region are cited as models for contributing to GDP and employment under strict supervision. The expansion into new frontiers, such as in-situ leach (ISL) mining in the Leonardville area of the Omaheke region, is expected to proceed under strict conditions, including independent environmental impact assessments, continuous monitoring, and transparent reporting to international ethical standards.
