Namibia launches National AI Institute to drive digital growth
Namibia is advancing its digital landscape through both institutional initiatives and grassroots entrepreneurship. The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) has launched the National Artificial Intelligence Institute, following a 2022 Cabinet decision. Information and Communication Technology Minister Emma Theofelus stated that the institute aims to ensure the country participates in digital development while aligning with national priorities.
This institutional push coincides with a rise in local youth utilizing AI to generate income. Young entrepreneurs are leveraging AI-assisted coding and digital tools to develop websites, business solutions, and specialized services like AI-powered accounting assistants. Experts note that these technologies are lowering barriers to entry in the tech industry, allowing individuals to provide services such as marketing automation and workflow management without extensive traditional programming backgrounds.
