Namibia mining sector explores alternative infrastructure financing

As mining operations in Namibia mature, there is a growing argument for diversifying how supporting infrastructure is financed. While mining companies traditionally carry all costs on their balance sheets, experts suggest that assets such as power, water, logistics, and accommodation could be funded through external long-term capital.

By separating core mining operations from supporting infrastructure, companies can preserve balance sheet capacity, share risks more effectively, and focus resources on primary value creation. This approach is particularly relevant as Namibia seeks to increase local processing capacity and strengthen supply chains for its mineral resources.

The potential for domestic value addition is highlighted by Namibia’s rare earth deposits, including dysprosium, terbium, neodymium, and yttrium. Rather than exporting raw concentrates, there is an opportunity to develop domestic separation and refining capabilities to transform these elements into commercially usable forms.
