Namibia Opens Walvis Bay‑Karibib Rail Corridor to Boost Freight

A new freight rail corridor linking the Port of Walvis Bay with the inland town of Karibib has begun operations. The line is expected to move up to 25,000 tonnes of cargo each month, removing an estimated 735 trucks from Namibia’s roads and cutting annual carbon emissions by about 900 tonnes of CO₂.

The corridor, launched by Kaleido Logistics together with state‑owned TransNamib in July 2026, is supported by a new logistics hub in Karibib that consolidates marble, granite and other regional commodities. The hub provides storage, loading, unloading and transshipment facilities for both bulk and containerised freight, aiming to shorten transit times and improve supply‑chain efficiency.

Kaleido Logistics CEO Xoán Martínez said the project expands the company’s logistics network across southern Africa and will serve as a competitiveness driver for Namibia. TransNamib CEO Desmond van Jaarsveld highlighted the partnership as part of the railway’s revitalisation strategy, positioning rail as the preferred mode for bulk and container freight.
