Namibia repatriates liberation heroes and ancestral remains from South Africa

Namibia has repatriated the remains of liberation struggle heroes Simon Petrus Niilenge and Festus Nehale, along with 84 ancestral remains, from South Africa. The remains were received at Hosea Kutako International Airport in a ceremony led by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Niilenge and Nehale were former political prisoners incarcerated on Robben Island during the struggle for independence. The 84 ancestral remains were previously held at the Iziko Museums in South Africa. President Nandi-Ndaitwah described the repatriation as an act of restoration for the dignity, identity, and belonging of the Namibian people.

In a related reflection on the nation's history, centenarian Magrietha Kuhlman shared her testimony of living through the apartheid era and witnessing the liberation struggle. She recalled the impact of the South African administration on communities in the ||Kharas Region and the broader fight for freedom led by figures such as Sam Nujoma.
