Namibia reports rising banking fraud and suspicious tax-linked transactions

Namibia is facing significant financial integrity challenges, with reports highlighting substantial losses and suspicious activities within its financial systems. According to the Bank of Namibia, banking fraud losses are rising sharply, growing from approximately N$8.7 million in 2020 to a projected N$79 million by the end of 2025. Experts warn that fraudsters are increasingly utilizing sophisticated methods such as deepfakes, voice cloning, phishing, and counterfeit banking applications.

Separately, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has identified approximately N$103.84 billion in transactions linked to potential tax-related offences between 2009 and 2025. While these figures represent suspicious transactions rather than confirmed evasion, the FIC emphasized the need for strengthened investigations and prosecutions. This follows Namibia’s recent removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, a milestone that officials say must be supported by effective recovery of criminal proceeds and addressing systemic gaps.
