Namibia faces FMD outbreak and EU beef import suspension

Namibia is facing a significant economic and agricultural crisis following a Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the Karasburg district of the //Kharas Region. The outbreak, involving the SAT-1 serotype, has been confirmed on multiple farms, with recent surveillance reporting 127 positive cases across 15 farms.

In response, the Namibian government has implemented strict movement controls, established roadblocks, and deployed numerous surveillance teams. Agriculture Minister Inge Zaamwani stated that the containment strategy requires approximately N$190 million to N$200 million, which includes the construction of a 290km disease-control fence from Ariamsvlei through Karasburg to Ai-Ais.

The outbreak has triggered severe international trade consequences. The European Union has suspended imports of fresh beef, sheep, and goat meat from the affected zone. Additionally, the United Kingdom has withdrawn authorization for fresh beef imports from the impacted area. Domestically, the meat industry is struggling; Savanna Beef has suspended cattle deliveries and bookings, and local butcheries report significant stock shortages.

While the government works to contain the spread, agricultural workers remain subject to the national minimum wage despite the financial strain on farmers. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has acknowledged the crisis, noting that the government is engaging stakeholders to mitigate prolonged financial distress for the livestock sector.
