Parliamentary tensions rise in Malawi and Namibia

Political tensions are rising in Malawi and Namibia regarding parliamentary conduct and the separation of powers.

In Malawi, Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has faced polarized reactions. While some citizens have rallied behind him, praising his courage to raise national issues and hold leaders accountable, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has issued a warning. DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito cautioned Suleman against blurring the lines between the legislature and the executive, alleging that his actions may provide political ammunition to the opposition and risk weakening the government.

In Namibia, the SWAPO Party has accused members of Affirmative Repositioning (AR) of “hooliganism and anarchy” within the National Assembly. Party Secretary Hilma Nicanor claimed that AR members, led by Job Amupanda, engaged in deliberate disruptions that forced Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila to adjourn proceedings. Similarly, the Asoli Progressive Party has criticized the current parliamentary environment, with leader Josef Kauandenge suggesting that political pressures are hindering effective legislative work.
