Namibian netball team qualifies for 2027 Netball World Cup
The Namibian national netball team, known as the Desert Jewels, has successfully qualified for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia. The qualification follows the team's performance at the Africa Netball Cup in Nairobi, Kenya.
Netball Namibia president Juanita Witbeen credited the achievement to stable financial backing from Debmarine Namibia, noting that such resources are essential for international-level preparation. Witbeen emphasized that the team's success is intended to inspire grassroots development and create pathways for young athletes within the country.
In addition to the national team's success, Namibian international Cornelia Mupenda achieved individual honors. After helping Namibia qualify for the World Cup, Mupenda captained the University of Johannesburg to the 2026 Varsity Netball Championship title, defeating North-West University 56–44. Mupenda was also named Best Defender at the Africa Netball Cup.
