Namibian Women's Caucus seeks greater legislative influence

The Parliamentary Women's Caucus in Namibia is advocating for increased female influence in legislation and decision-making processes. While women hold 42.3% of seats in Parliament, their representation drops to 16.7% in the National Council.

Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila characterized this disparity as a call to action for gender-equal representation and gender-responsive governance. She also noted the ongoing need to address gender-based violence.

National Council Vice Chairperson Emma Muteka reported a decline in women's political participation, citing a lack of specific opportunities and expressed concern regarding fear among young women entering politics. The SADC Parliamentary Forum supported the initiative, emphasizing the role of the Joint Parliamentary Women's Caucus in monitoring laws and engaging civil society.
