Namo Bharat RRTS launched as Meerut prepares for drone runway
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off India’s first Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) train, marking a major development for urban mobility in Uttar Pradesh and the Meerut region.
To accommodate the expected surge in commuters during the Raksha Bandhan festival, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will operate 47 additional Namo Bharat trips on the Delhi-Meerut corridor on August 27 and 28, 2026. These extra services will increase frequency to every eight minutes between Sarai Kale Khan and Modipuram.
Additionally, Meerut is positioned to become a hub for drone technology, with plans for India’s first unmanned aircraft and drone runway. Tenders for this project are expected to be finalized by August 26, 2026.
