Nampula civil society denounces irregular occupation of public spaces
Civil society organizations in Nampula, Mozambique, have raised alarms regarding the irregular occupation of public spaces. The Platform of Civil Society Organizations (OSC), part of the Governance and Human Rights Network, expressed concerns during a press conference regarding two specific developments.
First, the group denounced the construction of fuel stations on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue near the Lopes Building. Spokesperson and Kóxukhuro Association executive director Gamito dos Santos stated that this infrastructure is being built within the main roadway axis, which should be protected. The organizations argue this poses significant risks to road safety and could lead to environmental contamination.
Second, the platform questioned the legality and transparency of the allocation of space at the Nampula Agro-Industrial Fair (FAINA) on Trabalho Avenue for new construction projects. Describing FAINA as a site of historical importance to the city, the organizations are calling for competent authorities to intervene and for public participation in any decisions regarding the use of these areas.
