Nampula faces gasoline shortage as fuel supply enters reserve mode

The city of Nampula is experiencing a renewed gasoline shortage, leading to long queues at the few operational fuel pumps. Out of the city's 53 service stations, many are failing to operate daily, significantly impacting local mobility and transport services.

The General Inspection of Mineral Resources and Energy stated that the three ocean terminals in Nacala are operating in “reserve mode” to prevent a total stockout. Fuel availability at these terminals has dropped significantly from the usual 20 million liters to approximately 1.2 million liters.

This crisis follows a brief period of stability in early August, which occurred after authorities conducted operations to seize fuel being sold illegally in public spaces and private residences. However, the shortage has resurfaced, causing disruptions for commuters and drivers. A potential resolution is expected shortly, as the unloading of six million liters of gasoline at the Nacala terminals was recently completed, which is intended to normalize supply starting this Friday.
