Nampula province addresses infrastructure and community development challenges

The Nampula province in Mozambique is addressing several regional challenges involving infrastructure, public safety, and community development.

In Namicopo, Governor Eduardo Abdula inaugurated a new police station to replace the 3rd Precinct, which was destroyed during election-related protests in late 2024. The previous incident resulted in the death of a police officer and the destruction of a vehicle, which the Governor described as an attack on the state.

Regarding public utilities, Águas e Saneamento de Nampula (SAAS) reported that over 50% of produced water was wasted during the first half of the year. The company is implementing strategies to reduce losses through faster leak repairs, improved billing, and infrastructure maintenance.

Community initiatives are also underway, including a public health campaign in Mogovolas promoting exclusive breastfeeding to improve child nutrition, and a large-scale march in Mogincual where over 1,500 people protested against drug trafficking and consumption among youth. Additionally, local authorities marked the African Day of Decentralization by emphasizing the role of local governments in sustainable water and sanitation management in line with the African Union's Agenda 2063.
