Nana Akufo-Addo visits Gbewaa Palace to mourn late Ya-Na

Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on August 30, 2026, to offer formal condolences following the death of the late Dagbon Overlord, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.

Akufo-Addo noted that his absence during the initial mourning rites was due to being overseas at the time of the Overlord's passing. He had previously sent representatives to convey traditional greetings on his behalf. During the visit, he met with the Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari, and other Dagbon chiefs.

The former President highlighted his personal and political connection to the late ruler, noting his role in facilitating the 2019 reconciliation between the Abudu and Andani royal families. This reconciliation led to the historic enskinment of Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II and ended decades of chieftaincy conflict. In recognition of these efforts, the late Ya-Na had conferred the title ‘Naa Abudani’ upon Akufo-Addo.
