Nanaimo council advances tenant‑protection bylaw

Nanaimo City Council unanimously approved the first three readings of a tenant‑protection bylaw on July 20. The draft ordinance would apply to rental buildings with four or more units and require landlords who redevelop such properties to pay displaced tenants four months’ rent – four times the current provincial minimum – plus moving‑cost compensation, written notice, a mandatory information meeting and regular updates. Non‑compliance could be fined $250‑$500 per day per offence. Council members, including Councillor Hilary Eastmure, welcomed the added safeguards but noted gaps, such as the lack of a right of first refusal for tenants to return to the redeveloped unit and the absence of province‑wide vacancy controls. Mayor Leonard Krog and other councillors expressed support for the measure, which would be among the first of its kind in British Columbia under recent provincial legislation granting municipalities broader powers to protect renters.
