Nanaimo residents call for improved school zone signage
In Nanaimo, a local resident has called on the city council to review signage policies for summer and year-round school sites. Andréa Coutu expressed concern that school zones are not currently marked for these periods, potentially compromising student safety. While the city is working on a long-term project to establish permanent speed-reduced areas around schools, Coutu suggested that immediate signage changes could be implemented to encourage drivers to reduce speeds during summer sessions.
Separately, the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation has launched its ‘Stock the Lockers’ campaign. Executive director Crystal Borbandy stated the organization aims to raise $75,000 by September 15 to assist students with the costs of school supplies, student fees, athletic fees, and basic necessities such as clothing and medical or dental coverage.
