Clorinda-Nanawa border walkway restricted by new gate installation

The installation of a locked iron gate by the Argentine Gendarmería Nacional at the La Fraternidad pedestrian walkway has sparked significant unrest in the border region connecting Clorinda, Argentina, and Nanawa, Paraguay. The measure physically restricts transit to a limited window, primarily between 07:00 and 19:00, citing security reasons and a lack of personnel for continuous border control.

Local authorities from both sides, including Mayors Ariel Caniza of Clorinda and Claudio Samaniego of Nanawa, met to address the impact on workers, students, and merchants who rely on the crossing. Following discussions with Gendarmería, a temporary compromise was reached to flexibilize the hours, limiting the total closure to the window between 00:00 and 05:00, thereby allowing movement during other nighttime hours.

Despite this adjustment, residents and officials have criticized the decision as “a slap in the face to integration.” Concerns have been raised that restricting the official pedestrian passage may inadvertently drive people toward unauthorized and more dangerous crossing routes. The Defensoría del Pueblo of Formosa has also filed a formal complaint, noting that the lack of prior consultation with binational committees and foreign ministries ignores the social and economic dynamics of the border communities.
