Nanay River basin protection measures agreed by Peruvian government

The Peruvian government has agreed to implement measures to address environmental issues in the Nanay River basin, the primary water source for Iquitos in the Loreto region. Following meetings between the Coordinator of Native and Peasant Communities of the Nanay Basin (CONACCUNAY) and various state entities—including the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), the Ministry of Environment, and the National Water Authority—authorities committed to strengthening basin protection.

The agreements focus on improving water monitoring, promoting legal productive activities, and evaluating new measures to combat the expansion of illegal mining. Illegal mining currently threatens water quality, local fish populations, public health, and the security of indigenous communities. Additionally, the Nanay basin will be incorporated into national coordination spaces, and CONACCUNAY will present a work plan to address the development needs of the basin and its tributaries.
