Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches on Falcon Heavy

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. This mission marks the agency’s first flagship observatory launch since the James Webb Space Telescope.

Following its separation from the launch vehicle, the telescope is undergoing a roughly 100-day checkout phase. During this period, the spacecraft will travel approximately 1 million miles to the L2 Lagrange point. This phase is critical for testing the complete system chain in space, including instrument focus, image sharpness, data rates, and the deployment of solar shields and communication components.

Once the observatory is stabilized and positioned at its destination, NASA expects to release the first major infrared images in early 2027.
