Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case intensifies as DNA lead emerges and agency tensions rise

84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her Catalina Foothills home north of Tucson on the night of Jan. 31, 2024. A masked intruder was captured on the doorbell camera, and blood was later found on the porch. A Bitcoin ransom demand went unanswered; the family offered a $1 million reward and the FBI added a $100 000 bounty.

More than 100 days later, investigators announced a partial DNA profile from evidence collected at the scene, renewing optimism that the case can be solved. The sheriff’s office continues to send DNA to multiple labs, including a private facility in Florida and the FBI’s lab in Quantico.

Relations between Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and federal authorities have grown strained. The sheriff was reported to have reprimanded the county assessor for forwarding FBI‑requested data, and earlier resisted sending key evidence to the FBI, preferring a private lab. The sheriff has also said some evidence is being withheld to protect the investigation.

The disappearance has drawn national attention because of NBC Today co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie, prompting public petitions, celebrity commentary, and a neighborhood request to stop leaving flowers at the home. Despite numerous tips, arrests, and the capture of a separate homicide suspect, no suspect has been publicly linked to Nancy’s kidnapping.
