Nancy Guthrie disappearance in Arizona turns grim as detective warns she may not have survived

Nancy Guthrie, an 84‑year‑old retired teacher and mother of Today show co‑host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since early February 1 when she was allegedly abducted from her home in Arizona. Former detective Jon Buehler told NewsNation that the lack of any kidnapper communication and the presence of a large amount of blood at the front of the house suggest she likely did not survive the incident.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, continue to investigate. DNA and video analysis are ongoing, and tips are still being reviewed. Retired FBI agent Jason Pack confirmed that resources have been scaled back as the case moves from a rescue to a recovery focus. Former CIA officer and FBI special agent Tracy Walder echoed this, noting there is no public safety risk and the investigation now treats the incident as a crime rather than a rescue operation.
