Nancy Guthrie disappearance prompts retired FBI agent's kidnapping theories

Nancy Guthrie, an 84‑year‑old mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1 2026 and remains missing. Retired FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer shared four speculative scenarios on X: a “wrench attack” by an organized crime group targeting the family’s wealth; a family‑member motive; an acquaintance such as a handyman; and a revenge‑driven plot. She said the case “appeared consistent with a kidnapping for ransom plot gone south” and quoted that “someone angry at Nancy/a Guthrie family member perpetrated this crime to cause absolute misery to this family.” The investigation is led by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, whose handling of the case has faced criticism, though authorities have not endorsed Coffindaffer’s theories.
