Nancy Guthrie disappearance drives cross‑border search after Mexican tip

84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home on 31 January. Her daughter, NBC Today co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie, has offered a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to her recovery.

In early June a volunteer group in Nogales, Sonora – Buscando Corazones – received an anonymous tip alleging that Guthrie’s remains were buried in an unmarked grave near the Mariposa hills west of the border. The group, which had previously uncovered more than 25 unmarked graves and recovered at least 32 sets of human remains in the area, returned to the site on 10 June and plans another sweep on 16 June.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department acknowledged the tip on social media, stating it had not been contacted by Mexican authorities and that the investigation remains active. Federal agents, including the FBI, continue to review the case, but no concrete evidence linking the tip to Guthrie has emerged. Volunteers continue to search the remote creek beds while officials await verifiable leads.
