Nancy Guthrie: Kidnapper Note Claims Mother of NBC's Savannah Guthrie Dead

Nancy Guthrie, the 84‑year‑old mother of NBC Today co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her home near Tucson, Arizona on 31 January. The kidnappers initially demanded a multi‑million‑dollar ransom in Bitcoin.

On 6 February a second note was received by the family and local media. The message contained no ransom demand; instead it claimed that Nancy Guthrie had died unintentionally shortly after the abduction and offered an apology to the family.

Savannah Guthrie posted a video on 7 February in which she said the family had received the note, understood it, and continued to hope for her mother’s return, offering a $1 million reward for information. FBI agents and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office remain actively involved in the investigation, which has now extended beyond 20 weeks. No ransom has been paid and the case is still open.

Media outlets have reported mixed views on the note’s authenticity, with some claiming the information may be false, but law‑enforcement officials continue to treat the communication as part of the ongoing probe.
