Nanjing University researchers develop high-efficiency perovskite solar technology
Researchers from Nanjing University, involving teams from China and Canada, have developed a breakthrough in perovskite solar technology that could enable the industrial-scale production of high-efficiency, low-cost solar panels.
Unlike traditional silicon-based cells that require high-temperature, vacuum-based manufacturing, perovskite cells can be printed at lower temperatures. To overcome historical issues with material degradation caused by moisture and oxygen, the team developed a super-stable protective coating. This ultra-thin, lightweight material seals the perovskite structure and can patch tiny defects.
This advancement supports the development of tandem modules, which layer perovskite onto traditional silicon to capture light spectrums that silicon alone misses. This hybrid approach significantly increases conversion efficiency. While mass-market availability is still developing, the technology represents a major step toward challenging the dominance of silicon in the global solar market.
