Nantes archaeological excavation uncovers medieval fortifications

An archaeological excavation campaign conducted over three weeks at Cours Saint-Pierre in Nantes has yielded significant historical findings. Led by doctoral researcher Camille Dreillard from Nantes Université, the project involved six archaeology students and aimed to better understand the city's defensive fortifications that protected Nantes until the mid-18th century.

Key discoveries include the dating of the Tour du Mûrier to the early or mid-15th century, facilitated by the discovery of two gun ports (canonnières). Additionally, the team uncovered remains of a city wall dating back to Antiquity, along with various artifacts such as pottery, glass, and food remains in the former moat. These items are expected to provide insights into the daily life of Nantes residents since the end of the Middle Ages.
