Naoki Hamaguchi discusses Final Fantasy VII Revelation development

Director Naoki Hamaguchi has shared insights regarding the development of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, emphasizing the importance of remaining faithful to the original PlayStation title. Hamaguchi stated that the narrative structure for the remake trilogy was planned from the early stages to ensure the core story remained intact, despite the introduction of new characters and alternative timelines. He noted that he sought to avoid turning the masterpiece into a personal fan project, aided by consultations with original developers.

Additionally, Hamaguchi revealed that he advocated within Square Enix for a physical version of the game due to his support for physical media and understanding of player concerns regarding the shift toward digital-only releases. He clarified that while he pushed for a disc version, the final decision rests with the publishing team. He described a potential format where the disc acts as a ‘key-disc’ containing the beginning of the game, with the remainder requiring a download.
