Naoki Hamaguchi says no more Final Fantasy VII remakes, eyes new RPG

Director Naoki Hamaguchi, who has spent the past decade rebuilding Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII into a three‑part remake series (the first game launched in April 2020, the second in February 2024, and the concluding Final Fantasy VII Revelation slated for spring 2027), told Game Informer and Bloomberg that he will not undertake another remake after the trilogy ends. He said his current focus is completing Revelation and delivering the series in a "perfect state," but his longer‑term ambition is to create a new JRPG – either a fresh Final Fantasy title or an original IP – leveraging Square Enix’s capacity for large‑scale role‑playing games. Hamaguchi expressed excitement about stepping beyond the Cloud Strife universe and hinted that the studio’s extensive portfolio could provide the canvas for his next project.
