Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor examine rising far-right in new book
In their new book, ‘End Times Fascism: And the Fight for the Living World’, authors Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor examine the rise of global far-right movements. They argue that contemporary extremism is not an isolated political rupture but rather a recurring defensive response by capitalism to systemic crises.
The authors identify three primary groups converging around what they term ‘end times fascism’: religious extremists, technofascists, and ethnonationalists. Despite ideological differences, these factions are united by a shared conviction that they belong to an elite group destined to survive an impending apocalypse. This includes religious groups anticipating a final battle between good and evil, ethnonationalists seeking an ethno-state, and ‘digital eugenicists’ or technofascists aiming for a tech-driven utopia where a select few survive through space colonization or bunkers.
Klein and Taylor also connect modern authoritarianism to historical patterns of colonialism and capitalist crisis. The book concludes by highlighting grassroots community resistance and democratic socialist alternatives as paths toward building a different vision for the future.
