Naoya Inoue and Jesse Bam Rodriguez weigh potential super-bantamweight clash
Negotiations are intensifying for a potential unification bout between Naoya Inoue, the undisputed super-bantamweight champion, and WBA bantamweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. While a clash has been long discussed, complications arose when Rodriguez sought a unification fight against Christian Medina. However, recent reports suggest negotiations between the two camps are entering a final stage.
Rodriguez’s trainer, Robert Garcia, revealed that the fighter has been secretly preparing to move up to the 122-pound division to ensure he meets Inoue at the same weight. Despite the potential for a blockbuster fight, some analysts express skepticism regarding the timing, noting that a late-year bout for Rodriguez could leave him rushed before a March encounter with Inoue.
Inoue has indicated he is prepared to move up to the featherweight division if negotiations with Rodriguez stall. If he transitions, he could challenge existing featherweight champions such as Rafael Espinoza, Bruce Carrington, or Angelo Leo. Former champion Daisuke Naito has specifically highlighted a potential matchup against WBO champion Espinoza due to the significant height advantage the Mexican fighter holds.
