Naoya Inoue considers featherweight move amid negotiations
Super bantamweight unified champion Naoya Inoue has indicated he is preparing for a potential move to the featherweight division. This follows reports that negotiations for a bout against WBA bantamweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez may be stalling due to Rodriguez's own scheduling plans.
Former world champions Guishi Yotaka and Kawashima Gaku have expressed mixed views on the transition. While Guishi believes Inoue has the chance to capture a title in the new weight class, both experts voiced concerns regarding Inoue's durability against the larger opponents found in the featherweight division. Kawashima suggested Inoue might need to adjust his boxing style, potentially relying more on blocking and forward pressure.
Former champion Tokashiki Katsuo noted that while a five-division championship would be significant for Japanese fans, international interest remains high for a fight against Rodriguez, who is currently ranked highly in the pound-for-pound standings. A decision regarding his next move is expected soon.
