Naoya Inoue weighs fight against Bam Rodriguez or move to featherweight
Naoya Inoue, the unified world super bantamweight champion, is considering his next career move, with a potential fight against WBA bantamweight super champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez being a primary focus. Ohashi Gym President Hideyuki Ohashi indicated that while discussions are moving toward a bout with Rodriguez in February or March, Inoue is not strictly tied to that matchup. If a deal with Rodriguez is not reached, Inoue may opt to move up to the featherweight division to pursue a fifth world title.
Boxing legends Yoko Gushiken and Katsuo Tokashiki have shared differing views on this potential transition. Tokashiki expressed confidence in Inoue’s ability to handle the move and noted that even if he faces the highly-regarded WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza, he believes Inoue can succeed. However, Gushiken cautioned against an immediate jump to featherweight against top-tier opponents, suggesting that the super bantamweight division may be Inoue’s most natural and strongest weight class.
