Napa Valley Barrel Auction highlights demand for blue-chip wines
The 2026 Napa Valley Barrel Auction, held at the Robert Mondavi Winery, showcased high demand for premium wine vintages. Conducted by Sotheby’s alongside Napa Valley Vintners, the event featured over 100 winemakers and more than 2,000 attendees.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominated the auction with 67 of the 102 available barrels, followed by Cabernet Franc. Other varieties present included Merlot, Petit Verdot, Petite Syrah, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, and a single barrel of the Japanese variety Koshu.
Top-grossing lots came from prominent producers such as Chappellet Vineyard, Cardinale, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Continuum Estate, and Shafer Vineyards. Nick Pegna, Sotheby’s global head of wine and spirits, noted that demand remains concentrated among "blue-chip producers" and that established reputations continue to provide buyer confidence.
