Campania faces landslides and identity card forgery surge

Severe weather in the Campania region has triggered widespread emergencies, including a landslide in the Mergellina area of Naples. The landslide on via Fedro necessitated the precautionary evacuation of nine people from three apartments and required firefighters to secure unstable trees near a metro station line. Authorities have conducted approximately 150 interventions across the province to manage flooding and structural damage. In Castellammare di Stabia, rockfalls on the SS145 Sorrento road have forced alternating one-way traffic.

Simultaneously, law enforcement in the Naples metropolitan area is addressing a surge in criminal activity involving tampered electronic identity cards (CIE). Within a 24-hour period, Carabinieri arrested or reported four individuals across various locations, including Naples, Marano, and Capri, for possessing forged or altered documents. Investigators noted that in several instances, the microchips had been surgically removed from the cards, potentially to be reused for creating fraudulent identities. These incidents have been linked to broader criminal contexts, including drug trafficking.
