Naples commemorates the 83rd anniversary of the Four Days uprising

Naples is holding commemorations to mark the 83rd anniversary of the ‘Four Days of Naples’, the spontaneous popular insurrection that liberated the city from German occupation between September 27 and 30, 1943.

Local authorities, including Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and Campania Region President Roberto Fico, participated in ceremonies involving the laying of laurel wreaths at symbolic sites. These locations include the Posillipo Mausoleum, Piazza Bovio, and the monument in Piazza Carità dedicated to Salvo D’Acquisto, a carabiniere who died saving others.

The celebrations, which include exhibitions and meetings scheduled through October 11, honor the diverse group of citizens—including workers, women, and youth—who fought without external military aid. This historical event earned Naples the Gold Medal for Military Valor, as it was the first major European city to liberate itself from Nazi-fascist occupation through local uprising.
