Naples faces traffic gridlock and rising road safety concerns

Traffic congestion has intensified between the city center and the Lungomare, affecting areas such as Via Acton and Chiaia. This disruption is driven by simultaneous road resurfacing projects and traffic management measures implemented for the America's Cup preliminary regattas. In addition to daytime congestion, residents in the Via Petrarca area report severe safety issues during nighttime hours. The area has become a hub for 'movida,' characterized by illegal parking, excessive speeding, and noise. Local data indicates a sharp rise in road incidents; while 19 accidents involving 24 injuries and one fatality were recorded in 2019, the number of incidents rose to 39 with 31 injuries in 2025. Residents have described feeling like 'prisoners in their homes' due to the combination of blocked access and constant noise.
