Naples grants discounted access to Piazza del Plebiscito for volleyball event

The City of Naples granted a 50 percent discount on the concession fees for Piazza del Plebiscito to host a temporary sports arena for international volleyball. Due to the municipal government recognizing the public interest of the CEV EuroVolley 2026 opening match between Italy and Sweden, the city collected 83,000 euros instead of the expected 166,000 euros.

A massive temporary structure was erected in the historic square, featuring stands 16 meters high, a playing field, and lighting towers. The installation remained in place from August 17 until its scheduled dismantling on September 19. The event was attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

While the event featured advanced lighting displays on the colonnade, it also caused local logistical challenges, including extraordinary traffic management plans and road closures that affected those planning ceremonies at the nearby Basilica of San Francesco di Paola.
