Naples historic Conocchia complex sale sparks calls for state intervention

Hundreds of citizens, professionals, and local representatives have signed an appeal calling for state intervention to protect the historic Convitto Pontano alla Conocchia complex in Naples’ Rione Sanità district.

The complex, which dates back to the 18th century and has served as a hospital and school, was recently sold through a forced auction for approximately 1.2 million euros. This price is significantly lower than its estimated market value of at least 17 million euros. Because the site is formally protected under historical and artistic heritage laws, the sale is subject to a pre-emption right.

Coordinated by notary Dino Falconio, the group is urging the Ministry of Culture, the Campania Region, the Metropolitan City of Naples, and the Municipality of Naples to exercise their legal right to acquire the property at the auction price within the 60-day statutory period. This action aims to ensure the site remains part of the public heritage and is preserved for public use.
