Naples hospital reports rise in gasoline ingestion cases
The Cardarelli Poison Control Center in Naples has reported a significant increase in calls regarding hydrocarbon ingestion. Medical professionals have documented approximately 20 to 30 cases over the past week, primarily originating from central and southern Italy.
Anesthesiologist Crescenzo Sala noted that these incidents are often linked to attempts to steal gasoline from vehicle tanks using suction tubes. While many cases involve minor ingestion by asymptomatic individuals that resolve naturally, medical experts warn of severe risks.
Potential complications include gastrointestinal irritation and chemical pneumonia, particularly if the fuel is aspirated into the lungs. Health officials advise that individuals experiencing vomiting, headaches, or dizziness should seek immediate medical attention.
