Perugia explosion causes building damage and two serious injuries

A violent explosion occurred on the morning of Saturday, August 22, 2026, in a four-story residential building located at via Giambattista Vico 2 in Perugia, Italy. The blast, which primarily affected the top floor, caused a partial collapse of the roof and significant structural damage, including the destruction of internal walls and the projection of debris onto surrounding streets.

Two residents were seriously injured and transported to the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in critical condition. One victim, a woman, was found in the garden below the building after reportedly attempting to escape through a window. A second victim, a man from an adjacent apartment, was also treated for injuries.

Emergency services, including the Vigili del Fuoco, local police, and civil protection, responded to the scene. The building has been placed under seizure, and all residents of the affected staircase have been evacuated. While a gas leak is being investigated as a primary hypothesis, technical experts and investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the deflagration.
