Naples Poison Control Center reports gasoline ingestion spike
The Antonio Cardarelli Hospital Poison Control Center in Naples reported that 20 people sought assistance for gasoline ingestion within a two-day period. This sudden increase is believed to be linked to a temporary fuel shortage across the Campania region.
Of those affected, five individuals presented themselves at the emergency room, while the others sought telephone consultations. Hospital officials noted that most cases involved the ingestion of small quantities, resulting in asymptomatic patients with no significant health impacts. Most cases resolve naturally without emergency intervention.
Medical professionals advise that individuals experiencing vomiting, headaches, or dizziness should seek specialist care. The Poison Control Center, directed by Romolo Villani, serves as a primary reference for intoxication management in southern Italy, providing emergency guidance and maintaining stocks of antidotes and antitoxins.
