Belforte Clan investigated for Naples-Bari rail contract infiltration
The Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) has launched an investigation into organized crime infiltration within the construction sites of the Naples-Bari high-speed rail line. The probe focuses on a system designed to manipulate public contracts and subcontracts to favor specific companies.
Investigators have identified Pasquale and Camillo Belforte, members of the Mazzacane group based in Marcianise, as central figures. The clan allegedly utilized the company Areco Srl to secure advantages, aided by collaborators who allegedly manipulated the assignment of public works and services.
Out of 49 total suspects, the DDA has requested precautionary measures for 45 individuals. This includes requests for prison time for 37 people, house arrest for 4, and residence bans for 4 others. The charges range from mafia association and corruption to fraud, money laundering, and labor-related offenses. Specific allegations include the facilitation of preferential payments exceeding 1.5 million euros for Areco Srl through various bank transfers in late 2024.
