Squinzano to honor Lorena Isceri following fatal femicide

The community of Squinzano, in the province of Lecce, is organizing a candlelight procession to honor Lorena Isceri, a 45-year-old woman killed by her former partner, Federico Vella, on September 3. The incident occurred on the A1 motorway near Barberino del Mugello, where Vella reportedly kidnapped Isceri, placed her in a car trunk, and pushed her from a viaduct before taking his own life.

Mayor Mario Pede announced that the municipality intends to dedicate a street or building to her memory and is working with schools to raise awareness about gender-based violence and mental health. Local landmarks, including Palazzo dell’Orologio and Villa Cleopazzo, are being illuminated in red to symbolize the fight against violence against women.

The case has sparked intense national debate in Italy. On the television program ‘Dritto e Rovescio’, journalists engaged in a heated confrontation regarding the causes of femicide and the role of patriarchy, reflecting the broader societal tension surrounding the tragedy.
