Naples Zoo introduces Parthenope, a melanistic jaguar cub

The Naples Zoo has officially introduced Parthenope, a melanistic jaguar cub born this past May. Parthenope is the offspring of Ananga and Ares, the only breeding jaguar pair currently in Italy.

The cub's dark coat is due to a high concentration of melanin, a genetic trait often associated with black panthers. Zoo director Fiorella Saggese suggested that rising temperatures and a warmer climate may have contributed to the frequent breeding observed in the pair.

To maintain genetic diversity and prevent inbreeding, zoo officials plan to move Parthenope to another facility in the future. Management is also exploring potential collaborations with South American reserves to link captive management efforts with the protection of native habitats and water basins.
