Naples upgrades Maradona stadium for Euro 2032 bid
The City of Naples and the Campania Region have approved a €200 million renovation of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The plan raises the venue’s capacity from 54,732 to about 63,300 seats, with 50,270 meeting UEFA standards, adds 36 sky‑boxes of 16 seats each, installs 5,300 m² of photovoltaic panels that will generate roughly 1.75 GWh per year and cut CO₂ emissions by 377 tonnes, and creates a new third tier, a new lower tier and extends the roof by 15 m. The project, coordinated by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and Infrastructure Assessor Edoardo Cosenza, is slated for completion by 2031, ahead of the UEFA Euro 2032 tournament.
Across Italy, 13 cities have submitted dossiers for 16 stadiums to the FIGC by the 31 July deadline. UEFA will choose five Italian venues by 1 October, with the Juventus Stadium currently the only facility fully compliant. Other candidates include the renovated Maradona stadium, Bologna’s new multi‑purpose arena, Genoa’s Luigi Ferraris, and several upgraded venues in Bologna, Florence, Palermo, and Verona. Taranto’s new Erasmo Iacovone stadium, with a capacity of about 20,360, is not among the submitted dossiers, prompting local officials to call for improved transport links before it can be considered for future international events.
