Naples-Bari high-speed railway corruption probe leads to 20 precautionary measures
An investigation led by the Naples Prosecutor's Office, directed by Nicola Gratteri, has uncovered a corruption and labor exploitation system involving the Naples-Bari high-speed railway project. The operation, carried out by the Guardia di Finanza, has resulted in 20 precautionary measures against entrepreneurs and public officials in the provinces of Naples, Avellino, and Benevento.
Authorities have issued 10 house arrests, several house arrest orders with restrictions, and multiple suspensions from public service. The alleged scheme involved exchanging bribes—including cash hidden in Christmas panettone cakes, luxury watches, mobile phones, and vacations—to facilitate the awarding and accounting of contracts.
The investigation also highlights severe labor violations, including the exploitation of workers through illegal intermediation and grueling shifts, as well as technical fraud such as the use of low-quality concrete at the Grottaminarda construction site. The infrastructure project is valued at approximately 5.8 billion euros and involves funding from the PNRR.
