NAPTIP rescues 180 children from trafficking syndicates in Nigeria
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued more than 180 children allegedly trafficked from five states across Nigeria. The agency uncovered a network of criminal groups that reportedly operated under the guise of civil society organizations and humanitarian groups.
According to NAPTIP, these syndicates targeted vulnerable communities experiencing insecurity, promising parents educational assistance and back-to-school programs to facilitate the trafficking of children. In a recent operation, three children taken from Kajuru, Kaduna State, were recovered from a private building in Onitsha, Anambra State. Additionally, a nurse at the Federal Medical Centre in Onitsha was arrested after allegedly being found in possession of a trafficked child.
NAPTIP Director General Binta Bello has called on the umbrella body of civil society organizations in Nigeria to conduct internal investigations to identify and remove criminal elements using their platforms for illegal activities.
