NARD proposes 48-hour work week for Nigerian resident doctors

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has proposed new work-hour regulations for resident doctors in Nigeria to prevent professional burnout. The guidelines were developed following a nationwide assessment of 6,350 healthcare personnel across six geopolitical zones and deliberations with the federal ministry of health and social welfare.

Under the proposed framework, healthcare personnel would work a maximum of 48 hours per week, including weekends. The proposal stipulates that day shifts be limited to eight hours and afternoon shifts to six hours, with shifts exceeding 12 hours restricted to emergency situations. To ensure adequate recovery, the guidelines mandate a minimum 12-hour rest period between regular shifts and a 24-hour post-call rest period following weekday, weekend, or public holiday calls.

Additionally, the proposal includes provisions for mandatory one-hour breaks after six hours of continuous work and compensation for any authorized excess hours. NARD also recommended protected time for research and professional development.
